A tragedy is a type of drama that revolves around pain and suffering. This type of drama is the main focus of Aristotle in his work "Poetics", the earliest work on dramatic theory we have today. In Poetics, Aristotle defines tragedy and explains the rules for its construction. He also defends that tragedy is a superior form of art when compared with epic poetry.
