The ocean has three layers from the top to bottom containing different temperatures. The first layer is of warm oceanic water approximately 500 m think containing temperatures of about 20 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius. The second layer is the thermocline layer characterized by a decreasing temperature with increased depth. The last layer is that of very cold temperature that extends to the deep ocean floor. There are other factors which affect the distribution of temperature of ocean water which include: latitudes, unequal distribution of land and water, prevailing wind and ocean currents.
The following factors affect the distribution of temperature of ocean water: (1) Latitudes: The temperature of surface water decreases from equator towards the poles because the sun’s rays become more and more slanting and thus the amount of insolation decreases poleward accordingly.
