There is a very good strategy to start a speech and get your audience interested, especially when the topic is controversial such as this one: ask the audience a question. As a matter of fact, it can even be multiple questions. The purpose here is to get them to think about the topic and to anticipate what you are going to say about it. Examples would be:
- Would you like to be rich?
- Would you be happier if you were rich?
- How much money would make you happy? Ten thousand dollars? A million?
- What would you do if you had billions and billions of dollars? Take a moment to imagine it. Would those things make you happier than you are now?
Of course, there is no need for them to answer them out loud, nor to raise their hands or anything. But they will surely answer the questions in their minds, and that will get the ball rolling for you.
Then, you can move on to explain your point of view. Money does bring happiness because... and so on.
