Mildred Taylor shows how Paul is in conflict with himself as he grows older. Paul is not sure where he fits in, because he does not seem to fit in with either his white brothers or his African American family and friends. An example of this is when he is sent away from his father's table because there are white guests over. He learns that even though his father tries to treat him equally, the rest of society does not seem to think the same way. The older Paul gets, the more he realizes he is part of a bigger conflict between whites and African Americans and where he fits in.
