Actually, it takes more commitment from society to accept immigrants as fellow humans who are seeking a better and safer place to live and create a life for themselves and family. It's the Americans who need to help immigrants feel American.
For a new immigrant to feel American it can a very small amount of time, or a lot of time. It depends on the immigrant and the people surrounding them. For some immigrants they never feel American because they still feel like part of their old country and the people around them aren’t accepting of them.
