The major theme of this story is bravery. Dennis, Mac, Jeremiah, and Anna had to be brave. In the text, they leave the ranch to find humans. If they stayed, they might have not been able to help people.
Katniss was thinking about what Haymitch told her. He said that she just needs to focus on running. Do not try and grab any of the weapons nearby. She was weighing the odds.
