Summary of plot: The Price of Child is a fictionalized account of a young woman,traveling with her slave owner and two of her three children,who takes the bold step of declaring her freedom and beginning a new life as a free woman.Philadelphia in 1855 is the main setting for this story.
During the harsh winter, Tom and Bessie take a fruitless journey to the lower valley in search of food. As they return to the lodge, Bessie becomes increasingly weak and can barely walk. Recognizing that she will likely die shortly, Tom attempts to gather food for her and comforts her with chants and songs. After reminiscing about their lives together, Bessie dies and Tom buries her next to his father. Singing and mourning her death, Tom returns alone to the lodge.
In the beginning of Act 2, Scene 3, the Friar is picking herbs and flowers from his garden and thinking about what each of them can do. He is pondering the fact that some things that come from nature can heal a person while others can harm or even kill people. Additionally, some herbs can do both heal and harm if used different ways.
