After school, two friends, Amy and Samantha, are waiting for the bus on the sidewalk. The sky is cloudy gray, and the smell of rain is in the air.
Samantha looked up at the sky and muttered to Amy gloomily, “Darn, it looks like it’s going to rain today. Do you think this means the football game is going to be canceled?”
“Why does it matter to you? You weren’t even going to go, Sam! You hate football,” Amy replied curiously.
“That may be true, but my math tutor was going to the game,” she replied deviously. “No tutor, no math homework.”
“Oh gosh Sam. I thought maybe you actually had some school spirit for once, but no ,you were just avoiding homework. Why doesn't this surprise me?” Amy ranted.
“I don’t hate school that much,” Samantha protested
“Yes you do!”
“Maybe a little.”
“Just a little?”
“Okay, a lot.”
Amy turned to face her with mock seriousness, “Do you know how important math is?”
“Finding the circumference of a circle cannot be that important!” Samantha said in exasperation.
“Math,” Amy announced dramatically, “is the royalty of school subjects. Math homework, rises above all other homework.”
Down with the queen, Samantha thought to herself as the bus pulled around the corner.
