Personally I would start off by asking questions, such as how he is doing, and how he feels. I would go on to talk about what has happened to me, and include the happy things, such as "I am starting college". I would also maybe attach pictures along or trinkets. I wouldn't be sure on jokes though because they might offend him if you haven't met him yet.
