When flying from Florida to the Philippines island why does the shortest route pass through Alaska?

Because the earth is round, the distance seen on a flat map is a lot further than the distance on a globe, because of distortion. So following the circle that goes through these 3 points ( Florida, Alaska and the Philippines) it is a shorter distance to fly over Alaska.
