The mechanical wave are of two types i.e. longitudinal wave and transverse wave. In transverse wave, the particle of medium travel in a perpendicular direction. The waves formed by an earthquake are called seismic waves.
Earthquake occurs in the form of both traverse and longitudinal waves. P - waves are longitudinal in nature while S - wave are transverse in nature.
In S - wave, the movement of ground and velocity of propagation are perpendicular to each other.
Hence, the waves formed by an earthquake is an example of transverse wave.
