Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been fascinated by praying mantises. First, I just loved them because they were the biggest i
nsects found in my neighborhood. Then I loved them because they were vicious predators who hunted with a stealth that lions in Africa could envy. It wasn’t until I entered Science Olympiad in sixth grade, though, that I began to truly learn how complex and fascinating these deadly insect hunters were. Science Olympiad forced me to study the research on praying mantises in a way that I probably wouldn’t have done on my own. For example, did you know that Mantodea (or mantises, mantes) is an order of insects that contains over 2,400 valid species and about 430 general?
