Priests were considered to be among one of the three holy orders of the church along with the bishops and deacons. They were thought to be the only ones to receive holy orders of God and had certain special rights to maintain the religious order. Thus, John was treated quite warmly and received a good piece of meat and the warm place by the fire as he was going to be a priesthood which was considered as the lawmaker and preserver of Christianity. They had the power to punish people for their deeds and hence, people respected, obeyed and obliged them as it happens in the case of John even before he becomes a priest.
