Speciation is the natural process where new species are created through a single species. This process is a form of evolution and occurs with the appearance of geographical barriers and adaptations of species.
For speciation to occur, it is necessary that there is a single species that shares the same genetic characteristics. This species will have its members separated by some geographic barrier that will separate the species into two populations. Each population will stabilize in a different environment and each will undergo mutations that will allow each population to adapt to each environment.
This will cause genetic changes, allowing populations that previously shared the same genetic information, to become genetically different from one another. As a result, the populations will not be able to establish crosses between themselves, thus forming two distinct species.
