The atmosphere is defined as the gaseous envelope of the earth. There are five distinct layers that forms the earth's atmosphere. They are as follows-
(1) Troposphere- It is the lowermost layer of the atmosphere. It extends up to a height of about 10 km from the earth's surface. In this region, the temperature decreases with the increasing altitude. The air molecules are densely packed near the ground surface and as height increases, they are oriented in a scattered manner.
(2) Stratosphere- This layer extends from the height of about 10 to 50 km above the earth's surface. Here, the temperature increases with increasing height. This increasing temperature is due to the presence of the ozone layer that absorbs the incoming solar radiation.
(3) Mesosphere- This layer extends from the height of about 50 to 80 km above the ground surface. In this layer again the temperature decrease with the increasing altitude.
(4) Thermosphere- this layer extends vertically from about 80 to 500 km above the ground surface. In this layer, the temperature increases with the increase in height.
(5) Exosphere- This is the outermost layer of the earth's atmosphere. It starts from a height of about 500 km and extends further into outer space. Here, again the temperature decreases with the increasing height. The space is generally very cold.
