In Markus Zusak's novel "The Book Thief", the theme of individual identity vs. conformity to social expectations is explored. <u>The characters have strong beliefs concerning humanity, kindness, and morals, which prevents them from being easily influenced by society. They refuse to accept Nazi ideologies of racial superiority</u> and, in the main character Liesel's new home, a Jewish man is hidden and taken care of so that Nazis won't take him to a camp. Liesel and her new "parents" are very much aware of the risk they are taking, but<u> they believe it is worth risking your own life to save someone else's.</u>
