when commodore perry visited japan, he forced japan into trading with the west, which was something that had been very limited in japan. before perry's visit, the shogun didn't want japan to trade often with the west, and things like western technology was limited. after commodore perry's visit however tge power of the shogun ended, and japan opened itself up more to trading with the west, causing japan to also modernize itself technologically.
