He is known as a trickster who helped free humankind from a clamshell. He taught humans many lessons, including how to live a good life. The Haida created masks for dancing rituals and trade offerings at potlatches. These large, ceremonial feasts were at the center of Haida culture. Potlatches honored three important events. The first was a marriage that united members of two different clans. The second was the giving of names to clan members.
