Carbon dioxide diffuses from the atmosphere through the stomata across the intercellular spaces to the photosynthetic cells. During the light stage, energy is used to split the carbon dioxide into oxygen atoms and free carbon ions. The carbon atoms then combine with hydrogen and the oxygen atoms to form a glucose molecule.
