The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is one of the United States federal agency, of the Department of Health and Human Services that was established June 30, 1906. This federal agency is responsible for the well-being of the public health by ensuring the regulation of dietary supplements, veterinary drugs, tobacco, medical devices, vaccines, biological products, cosmetics and also electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED). Their role is to ensure these items are safe, secure and effective.
The Food and Drug Administration was established on 30 June 1906, following the passage of the first major food and drug safety bill known as the “1906 Pure Food and Drug Act”. This was established in order to get the government to regulate food. The FDA is a federal agency under the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The FDA is headed by a commissioner, who is appointed by the President, with four directorates of the agency which are Foods and Veterinary Medicine, Medical Products and Tobacco, Global Regulatory Operations and Policy, and Operations.
