On the way back from the battle, Macbeth had encountered some witches who then proceeded to tell him he will become King. After returning, King Duncan (considered very nice especially for being a king) promoted him to Thane. But overcome with greed Beth started thinking about what the witches said and started to fantasize about killing the king. The King hosted a party for Beth's promotion at Beth's house. Macbeth's wife then heard about the "prophecy" and tried to convince Macbeth to kill king who then proceeded to do as told. At the end of the story Macbeth killed the current King out of greed.
