These substances contain toxic chemical elements like Lead, Mercury, Silver etc referred to as heavy metals. Heavy metals do not get easily decomposed by microbes. Hence, they get washed away by water erosion from lawn they were applied into major water bodies. These elements acts as WATER POLLUTANTS.

Insecticides and herbicides, no matter how helpful they are in eliminating the enemies of agricultural crops/plants, they are very harmful to living organisms. When they get flushed into the water body, they contaminate it and makes the water toxic to living organisms. They become toxic in the sense that, they kill animals like fishes when they ingest them or gets absorbed by plants.
