The region of the mitochondria with the highest level of hydrogen ion is the INTERMEMBRANE SPACE. The mitochondria is made up of many parts, such as the outer membrane, the inner membrane, the intermembrane space, the cristae and the matrix. The high concentration of hydrogen ion in the intermembrane space is used to power ATP synthase.
