Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare that was written early in his career. This tragedy tells the story of a pair of young brides who fall in love but are hindered because their two families are enemies.
The story of Romeo and Juliet is based on an Italian story, which was transformed into a poem in The Tragical History of Romeo and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562, and retold in prose at William Painter's Palace of Pleasure in 1582.
Shakespeare uses a dramatic structure. Effects such as the change between comedy, and tragedy into a heightened tension, expansion of small characters, and the use of sub-plots to affix the story, have been praised as one of the earliest signs of Shakespeare's dramatic talents.
