The message of the poem Laura is “true love doesn’t look at physical appearance only.” This is because the speaker of the poem still loves Laura although she is different in appearance in the present and in the past.
EXPLANATION
The poem "Laura" by Italian poet Francesco Petrarch, illustrates a man's obsession for years with a woman and her beauty. Laura is a love poem. It is said that this poem was written for about 20 years. Most of these poems are included Canzoniere or Rime. Laura in this poem is suspected to be Laura de Noves. Laura de Noves is a woman and a mother from Avignon, France. But because Petrarch gave no clue who Laura really was, some readers suggested another Laura's name. Some critics believe that Laura is not a fictional character, not inspired by one particular person.
Based on the poem, Petrarch was supposed to meet Laura for the first time on 6 April 1327 at a Church of Sts. Claire, Avignon. In his poetry, he seems to have made Laura a lifelong obsession, even until his death on April 6, 1348.
