The action of Carnehan preparing things for his journey show that they are taking this adventure seriously and truly wish to accomplish their goal of becoming kings. Although they had trials and tribulations to face, they are stepping up to the plate and conquering them.
Tom calls Nick Shakespeare referring to the time they spent in college together at Yale when Nick wanted to become an author like Shakespeare. Nick feels that he has moved on from that dream.
The reason why is because reading your essay several times makes sure you have no mistakes. Sometimes you can miss mistakes if you reread it once.
