The Necklace was an 1884 short story written by French writer Guy de Maupassant. The story is known for its twist ending which is considered a characteristic of de Maupassant's style. Forestier lent her diamond necklace to Loisel who after losing the borrowed necklace replace it with a diamond necklace purchased for thirty-six thousand francs. However, at the end of the story, it is revealed that the original necklace was fake which cost about five hundred francs.
