Students learn better when they aren't hungry. Which leads to a healthier and more knowledgeable community (knowledge is power). When these students graduate they will be able to work and provide more, physically and mentally. Thus making the community as a whole more enriched and profitable.
It had something to do with the medals. Nick was given a medal only because he was an
American. The other Italians put their
lives on the line and that is why they got their medals but it is not just getting
a medal but how you earn it by being brave in battle. Nick felt he did not earn his and feels
alienated as a result.
